news anchor for WKBT (a CBS affiliate in La Crosse, Wisconsin) who recieved fan
mail-- or rather hate mail -- from a man calling her fat and a bad role model
to young girls because of her weight. Instead of letting his words affect
her, she defended herself in a very graceful and mature way, by not stooping to
his level and instead explaining that she already knew this and didn't need it
pointed out to her, and that he was being a bully. She went on to discuss
that bullying is an issue in our schools today, and that October is National
Anti-Bullying month. Her statement is used in some schools because
October is, as pointed out previously, National Anti-Bullying month, and her
statement addresses that issue.</span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The results of the vice presedential
debate varied; Fox News and CNN both say that Paul Ryan had a better showing
than Joe Biden, but MSNBC says that Joe Biden had a better night.
One section of the debate that Joe Biden seemed strong in was over the war in
Afghanistan when we accused Ryan of wanting more American troops in
Afghanistan. One part of the debate that Ryan looked strong in was during
the discussion over the American economy, he hammered Obama on his failed
policies and was strong on the fact that the American people deserve better.
During the course of last night's debate, there were no gaffs to my knowledge,
neither candidate said anything that could really hurt their image. I
think the undecided voters will definately lean towards Paul Ryan in last
night's debate. Throughout the debate Joe Biden was laughing,
interrupting, and pacifing Paul Ryan and was seen as being a disrespectful
politician who could not handle criticism. The citizens who were already
democratic are going to vote for Biden and probably did not mind this barbaric
behavior, but for the people who were on the fence about this election, I think
they will definately prefer Ryan's strong, caring, and patient character which
was shown through the debate last night. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
There was no clear cut winner in the vice-presidential
debate, but a few people think Biden won. Ryan had a very effective comment
when he said that the Obama administration's foreign policy was
"unraveling." There were no gaffes,but Biden might be criticized
for his body language. In the beginning of the debate Biden laughed out
loud and smirked at some of Ryan's statements. But Ryan was smirking
through most of the debate also. Then towards the end Biden became more serious
and monotone in his responses. Biden did not look at Ryan that much and looked
down many times. The debate could impact the election a great deal, but some
voters might have already made up their mind after the first debate.</div>

at it. Im not for sure who the winner will be because both these men have
making good points and refuse to lose. They are both getting to the point
of the election where they are both interupting each other. They have
literally not even came close to agreeing on one thing. They are also
both being jerks to each other but I have realized Biden is being more rude by
his body language and interupting more. I think the way its looking Paul
Ryan may win but you never know due to the intensity of this debate.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

political consultant, political commentator, attorney, and media personality,
as well as a member of the Democratic party. In the presidential election
of 1992, he came up with the saying, "the economy, stupid" in an
attempt to remind Clinton what he should focus on to unseat the incumbent,
President Georg H. W. Bush. The saying, while originally meant for only
those involved in running Clinton's campaign, went on to become a sort of
slogan for the campaign. Clinton went on to successfully win the
election.<br />
<br />
Mary Matalin is a political consultant for the Republican party. She
worked with George H. W. Bush on his 1988 campaign and his 1992 reelection
campaign, which he lost. She is married to James Carville, which is
unusual because they are both political consultants-- for opposing parties, and
worked against each other in the 1992 presidential election.</span><br />

Of course you try to associate yourself with things all of America love. So where did Obama go on Thursday- Madison, Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin. And while there, he met with the Badger basketball team. As many of you are aware-- the Wisconsin Badgers are America's team. It will be interesting to see how big of a bump this creates in the polls.<br />
<br />
On a more serious note, this is a neat story about how two players on the team worked to make this happen. One player a Republican from Iowa, and the other a Democrat from Chicago. <br />

Shortly after noon on Thursday, most of the members of the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball team were resigned to to spending the afternoon running the hill at Elver Park as part of the Badgers’ preseason conditioning program.<br />
Meanwhile, redshirt freshman point guard George Marshall was working the phone. The Chicago native had some connections in his hometown and was in the process of putting the final touches on securing 16 VIP passes to President Barack Obama’s campaign stop on the UW campus.<br />
A few hours later, Marshall and his teammates were standing in a room at the Education Building on Bascom Hill as Obama walked in the door and made a motion like he was shooting a jump shot.<br />
“It was really exciting,” Marshall said.<br />
Obama spent about 5 minutes talking to the Badgers and posed for a picture with the team. Junior forward Zach Bohannon was the first to approach the president and invited him to join the team for a pickup game; Obama declined, citing his tight schedule in Madison, but promised to return after the election was over.<br />
Marshall said he was floored when Obama said how impressed he was by the Badgers’ success on their home court and in the NCAA tournament. Later, senior guard Dan Fahey nervously asked the president for any advice he had to offer on the LSAT, which Fahey is scheduled to take on Saturday.<br />
Bohannon had done most of the heavy lifting on setting up the meeting between the Badgers and Obama. Bohannon, who admits he leans to the right, used Twitter on Wednesday and Thursday to put a full-court press on Obama in an attempt to set up the aforementioned pickup game.<br />
Some of the Badgers, as it turns out, often exchange in some spirited debates about politics. But it was time to put those differences aside, according to Bohannon.<br />
“This is the President of the United States,” said Bohannon, who sat out last season after transferring to UW from Air Force. “Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal, you’ve just got to know that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.<br />
“I had some friends at home (in Iowa) saying, ‘What are you doing, Zach? Aren’t you a die-hard Republican?’ I said, ‘Well, yeah. But I’m going to stay neutral until it comes time to vote.”<br />
Bohannon was convinced his efforts were going to be rewarded. His teammates weren’t as confident.<br />
“Once we got done lifting (Thursday morning), I went back to my phone and said, ‘Guys, you might not believe this is going to happen, but seriously, this is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Bohannon said. “We’re actually going to be able to meet the president. Everybody was like, ‘OK, Zach, whatever.’ ”<br />
That’s where Marshall, who’s probably the quietest player on the team, stepped in with an idea. Martin Nesbitt, one of Obama’s good friends, was the assistant coach on Marshall’s AAU team; Nesbitt’s son, Alex, who now plays at Harvard, was also on the team.<br />
“I came off real confident about it,” Marshall said when asked if he really thought he could arrange the meeting with Obama, “but I just thought I could give it a try.”<br />
Marshall called his father, got Martin Nesbitt’s number, and placed a call Thursday morning. Martin Nesbitt was in Denver with Obama at the time – the president was there for his Wednesday night debate with Republican challenger Mitt Romney – and thought Obama would be able to meet with the Badgers.<br />
Nesbitt contacted a White House representative, who contacted Marshall to arrange the VIP passes.<br />
Meanwhile, time was running out on the Badgers. Bohannon said it was about 12:45 p.m. when Marshall was making the arrangements.<br />
“We’re all supposedly getting ready for the hill and he has these VIP passes,” Bohannon said. “We’re all scrambling and it’s like, ‘Let’s not go to the hill, we can’t do this since we got these passes.’ And then next thing we know, we’ve got (senior forward) Ryan Evans taking charge and telling (coach Bo Ryan), ‘This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, you’ve got to let us do this.’<br />
“Finally, he’s like, ‘OK, have fun. Make sure the whole team goes.’ The next thing we know, we have 16 backstage passes to meet with the president directly, all thanks to George.”<br />
Does Marshall, who’s in the running to take over the starting point guard role, think he made some points with his teammates?<br />
“Hopefully, I did,” Marshall said. “But I just knew somebody that was close to him. I just gave it a try.”<br />

Thoughts from students....<br />
<br />
In my opinion, a plus for Romney in the debate is that voters expected Romney to come out with a boom in the first debate and prove himself to America that he is the best choice of candidate. With this on his conscience, I'm sure he prepared adequately and well enough to be ready for the debate, which I think he was by his confident poise he held throughout the entire debate.<br /><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"></span> <br /><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">A plus for Obama is that this was not his first Presidential debate. With the experience, he was able to execute the questions asked.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"></span> <br /><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">I don't think Obama or Romney made any critical mistakes.</span><br /><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><div style="background-color: white; border: currentColor; color: black; overflow: hidden; text-align: left; text-decoration: none;">
“And congratulations to you, Mr. President, on your anniversary. I’m sure this was the most romantic place you could imagine — here with me!” I thought this was pretty humorous and my favorite line of the night. </div>

</div>
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">I think Romney came out ahead. I started watching the debate 28 minutes in and I couldn't help but notice Obama's stressed, long face while Romney seemed alive and comfortable. A political science professor, Paul Sracic, at Youngstown State University said "Romney won. The real surprise is that he won so clearly." I think Romney had a crisp performance while Obama seemed to stray away from a direct fight.</span><br />

night's debate was his body behavior. During the debate Romney would look
straight at Obama when speaking and continue holding a half-smile, presenting
himself as being strong and comfortable. One plus for Obama last night
was that he was very polite to both Mitt Romney and the moderator throughout
the debate. I felt like neither candidate said anything that could severely
hurt them in the next campaign. I feel like Romney had a stronger night
that Obama overall. Obama often looked at the ground and seemed
very irritated throughout the night, while Romney came across as
strong and laid-back. Also, Obama's stance on taxation dealing
with small businesses was criticized harshly by Romney. Romney
pointed out that Obama is taxing the upper 3% of small businesses more
money while they employ more than a quarter of the workforce in America;
this forces the businesses to either raise their prices on products or cut
spending by laying off employees.</span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">Mitt Romney won the debate last night, which makes it a good
restart of his campaign. A plus for Romney is that people got to see what he
looks like standing next the President of the United States, so voters can
better imagine Romney as president. A plus for Obama was when Romney denied he
had a 5 trillion dollar tax cut plan and he had been talking about it for
weeks before the debate. Obama made a mistake when he didn't mention the 47%
comments that Romney had said. The presidential race is even closer than it was
before the debate with Obama still ahead, but because of the debate Romney will
surely get a "bump" in his points.</span></div>

is the company Mitt Romney started. Bain Capital is a very profitable company
and Mitt made a lot of money with this investment company.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The issue is Bain Capital has been accused of

being against outsourcing, especially to China. Also, Obama likes to show that

think Barack should have to show his birth certificate in order to run for

state. Critics feel this is an issue because a few believe Obama was not born

It’s an issue because Romney and others claim that Obama may not be a U.S. born citizen. Perhaps he was born in Kenya and the Kenyan government, have agreed to keep his records closed. The fact that Obama initially refused to release his birth certificate and other records here in the U.S. brought suspicion to many. Romney doesn’t see this point to be that important, but yet he makes small comments and jokes in some of his speeches regarding Obama’s records and birth certificate. <span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><br /></span><span id="yui_3_2_0_6_1349268631617555" style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">I feel that this issue isn’t important in this election at all. I don't know why Romney would even make comments about Obama's birth certificate in some of his speeches. To me, and I'm sure to many others, it's a dead issue. I guess it's just a way to put Obama down and to get people thinking again. Obviously Obama has showed his birth certificate and he is our president therefore, he’s totally qualified. </span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">This is a tactic that Romney can use against Obama.
There is a clip of Obama that was recorded in 1998 at Loyola University,
according to Romney's campaign and fellow Republicans who are trying to promote
it. It features the president discussing what he calls a "propaganda
campaign" against government funded entities, and suggesting better ways
to make government more effective. Obama says: "I think the trick is
figuring out how do we structure government systems that pool resources and
hence facilitate some redistribution – because I actually believe in some
redistribution, at least at a certain level to make sure that everybody's got a
shot." The words; "I actually believe in some redistribution" –
that Republicans are using against Obama, characterizing them as an endorsement
of redistributing wealth, rather than making sure government agencies were well
supported. Many conservatives argue redistributing wealth is the same as
socialism. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">My opinion on this is that while Obama does believe in
everyone having the same opportunities, the conservatives are blowing this way
out of proportion. I think while socialism kind of resembles Obamas image,
overall his dream is a democracy.</span></div>

how Obama wants redistribution, which is spreading the wealth between

considered a racist, sexist and homophobe religion, but that's just by
stereotype. Lawrence O'Donnell, a democrat, attack Mormanism saying that is was
a recist faith and was directing it straight at Romney. Many people are
considering this not to be an issue because a person's faith shouldn't effect
how others see him. As long as Romney does not use his religion to get him
votes, no one should use it against him. Romney doesn't go around advertising his
faith claiming it makes him different, so people are going to label him as
different. Most democrats believed that Obama would use Romeny's religion as a
ways to attack Romney, but to supprise he decided not to. But on the other

not have put faith and religions into a part of their campaign.</span><span style="font-family: "Tahoma","sans-serif"; font-size: 10pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;"><br />

In my opinion this issue is outragous. This shouldn't even be considered as an

<span style="font-family: Calibri;">Obama can use this topic against Romney. It was a
commercial that was aired on local channels that the Democratic party put on
the air. The commercial was about a women that lost her life to cancer after
her husband lost his job due to Romney’s choices. The women lost her life
because she couldn’t afford to pay for health insurance so instead of going to
the doctor for her cancer she just died. Her husband got on the screen and
blamed Mitt Romney for shutting down the plant that he worked at; which caused
this grave tragedy. </span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">I think this is very low blow from Obama’s
administration to use. Although the man’s wife did die, fact checkers point out
that she didn’t die until years after the man lost his job. Technically the man
did lose his job due to Romney shutting down his plant, but not to the extent
the commercial laid it out to be. I understand that Obama wants more votes but

to get those votes.</span></div>

I feel this is an issue because some people in the 47% can't

In my opinion the statement isn't the issue, the fact that someone had the

presidency. This shows how out of touch, ignorant, cruel, callus and
indifferent Mitt Romney is to the hard working men and woman of this country
that fall into the 47% that Romney speaks of. Romney, in one two minute video
has isolated himself off of the huge amount of people. This will prove to be
detrimental to his campaign. Showing how the only people who will vote for him,
either are the rich 1% or just hate Obama that much, to vote for someone that
would so willingly write off half of the country.</div>

of Romney have been using this against him. In an amateur video taken of Romney
at a private event he is seen talking to people about the U.S. He said in the
video about 47% of the U.S. uses some form of government help and that they
were basically freeloaders. Democrats quickly jumped on this by saying Romney
really doesn’t care about the people. They used the video in ads to show people
just what he said about citizens. In my opinion Romney should have watched what
he was saying no matter what, even if he was at a private event. He’s running
to become our next president and anything he says between now and election time
will come down to if he’s elected or not.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;">This is a MAJOR current issue in the 2012 presidential
election. Recently, a video came out that was a taping of Romney discussing the
47%. There was a hidden camera at the Republican convention and it had
recordings of Mitt Romney commenting about he wasn't worried about the 47
percent of Americans that were guaranteed to vote for Obama. He said that they
were mostly African Americans that were dependent on the government’s income
and pay no federal tax. I am appalled that a man with these types of opinions
is running to be the chief of state. Most working Americans that work part time
jobs need some sort of government help.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-indent: 0.5in;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I think he is
ignorant and arrogant for the comments that he made, and he should think twice
before stating those types of personal thoughts in front of anyone. Even though
I am a democrat I think the best thing that Romney could do in this election
would be to try and persuade that 47% of Americans to vote for him. Of course
that would be impossible to do, but giving up and telling people that it would
be a waste of time is a complete insult. Many people were insulted by his
comments, and this made him loose many of the undecided voters. If i could
vote, i know that i would never vote for him.</span></div>
- Katie, Troy<br />
<br />
Forty-seven percent is what Romney said is 47% of the population are dependent on the government and take no responsibility for their own lives. Obama and others feel this is an issue because Romney is degrading lower class citizens. They also feel it's an issue because he is being stereotypical and saying that the people on welfare are not helping themselves so why should the government help them. Think about all the people living off of welfare or have some assistance from the government, and think about how they feel towards Romney after he said this.<span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;"><br /></span><span id="yui_3_2_0_6_1349268631617551" style="font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: small;">I feel that this is an issue because some people are on welfare for a short period of time and are using it to get back on their feet. That's absolutely wonderful that our government allows that. I also think it is an issue because some people use it to get by while they are still in school or until they can get a better education and make more money so they don't have to be on it one day. However, I know of people that have link cards or that live on welfare that have nicer homes, cars, and flat screen T.V.'s, but someone with a low paying job who doesn't qualify for these aids, is living a less luxurious life. How does that work? Nobody can win in this situation.</span><br />

<div class="Standard" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
Obama surrogates uses this as an issue because Romney has not
released his tax returns from any year before 2 years ago. Also, when Romney
did release his tax returns he only paid 14%, which is less than the average
middle class worker. His father released 10 years of tax returns and set a
political standard. Romney has millions in his IRA which should not be
possible. </div>
<div class="Standard" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
I feel this an important issue because my mom pays more taxes
than 14% with deductions. So why does Romney who is rich, pay less taxes? Also,
since Romney's father released 10 years of tax returns Romney should do the
same.</div>

of Romney has brought this up. Critics of him have been asking to see his tax
returns because in his campaign he plans to get rid of loopholes for the
wealthy. For weeks he didn’t give them up to the public but when he finally
did, some people that supported him were shocked to find out what percent he
paid of his taxes. He paid a 13.9% tax rate to which most Americans pay over
20%. He also was said to have a Swiss bank account and investments that
furthered his income that couldn’t be taxed. In my opinion, Romney should have
told the truth from the beginning saying he paid a lower tax rate and why he
did. Also he should have just released them as soon as people asked to show
that he had nothing to hide.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

When polls don't favor the person that people like, they

the current polls that show President Obama gaining key states, are inaccurate.
They criticize that pollsters are interviewing too many Democrats and not
enough Republicans and Independents. Which artificially inflates the
