Questions for Wednesday, August 22.....
Who is Grover Norquist?
Why is he in the news?
What do George H.W. Bush & Grover Norquist think about each other?
How does Grover feel about Paul Ryan?
How does Jackie Cilley feel about Grover?
Student Response....
Grover Norquist is the President of Americans
for Tax Reform. He is in the news for stating that George HW Bush lied to the
American people by raising taxes while Bush was in office. Norquist and Bush do
not think highly of one another. Bush thinks Norquists claims were out of
line and Norquist, as I stated earlier, thinks Bush lied. Norquist thinkis
highly of Paul Ryan because he has a set agenda/platform for the next four
years while, as Norquist says, Obama does not. Jackie Cilley welcomed
Norquist's criticism but does not agree with his veiws on taxes along with
other things.

Teacher's note....
Norquist asks each US Senator and US Rep to sign a plede to not raise taxes. Presently on the Republican side 236 of 242 US Reps signed the pledge, and 41 of 48 US Senators signed the pledge.
The disagreement with Bush stems from when campaigned Bush had made the comment- "No new taxes." And later after being elected, Norquist felt he had gone back on this promise.
Presently Norquist is becoming more controversial with many Republicans because for some there is a sense by forcing this pledge, it may limit options for solutions and compromise.
The actual pledge and list of signees can be found here---
