This year, the
Presidential and vice presidential debates are all scheduled in October, from
9:00 pm to 10:00 pm, Eastern time. The first Presidential one is
Wednesday, October 3, at the university of Denver, in Denver, Colorado.
The moderator will be Jim Lehrer, The executive editor of the PBS
NewsHour. The topics discussed will be focused on Domestic Policy.
The time will be divided into six fifteen minute segments, and the topics will
be chosen by the moderator ahead of time. In each segment, the moderator
will open with a question, and then each candidate has two minutes to respond.
The Vice Presidential Debate is next, on
Thursday, October 11, at the Centre College in Danville Kentucky. In this
debate, the focus is on both foreign and domestic policies. The moderator
will be Martha Raddatz, the ABC News Chief Foreign Correspondent. This
debate will be run in a similar way to the first Presidential one, with the
minor difference that it will be broken into nine ten minute sections, unlike
the Presidential one which will be done in six fifteen minute long segments (as
explained above).
The next debate is the second Presidential
debate on October 16, a Tuesday. The candidates will meet at Hofstra
University in Hempstead, New York. The debate will be done in the style
of a town meeting, with the members of the meeting being undecided voters
chosen by Gallup, and the moderator will be Candy Crowley, the CNN Chief
Political Correspondent. The chosen participants will ask the candidates
questions about both foreign and domestic policies. The candidates will
each get two minutes to answer the question and then an additional minute will
be had for discussion.
The fourth and final debate is the third
Presidential debate in Boca Raton, Florida, at Lynn University, on the
following Monday, October 22. The format will be the same as the first
debate, with Bob Schieffer (the host of Face the Nation on CBS) as the
moderator, and focusing on foreign policy only, instead.
